Child has a seizure on the plane, Guangzhou doctor applies acupressure points to save in time

On August 2nd, Huang Yunxuan, an attending physician at the Acupuncture Rehabilitation and Massage Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, had just boarded a flight from Guangzhou to Xining when he received a call for help from the flight crew: a 12-year-old boy on board was foaming at the mouth and experiencing convulsions in his arms and legs.

As it turns out, at 07:05 that morning, Southern Airlines flight CZ3249 was taxiing to the runway for takeoff. At this time, a parent hurriedly ran to the service desk, urgently calling for cabin crew assistance, informing them that their child was having a seizure and needed help. The cabin crew immediately initiated the rescue procedure, reported to the captain, and broadcasted a call for doctors.

Upon hearing the broadcast, Huang Yunxuan identified himself and came forward to assist. Seeing the young passenger shaking all over and foaming at the mouth, Huang Yunxuan immediately diagnosed it as a seizure. The parent recalled that for this trip, the child had only slept for 2 hours the night before and woke up at 3 a.m. to go to the airport. It was likely that the stress symptoms were triggered by physical exhaustion.

Based on his clinical experience, Huang Yunxuan pressed the patient's Hegu acupoint on the left hand while comforting the family's emotions. After the treatment, the child quickly regained consciousness.

Subsequently, using a stethoscope and blood pressure monitor provided by the flight crew, Huang Yunxuan found that the child had elevated blood pressure and heart rate, indicating the need for further examination at a hospital. The parents followed the doctor's advice and decided to cancel their trip. The more than 170 passengers on board also cooperated very well, without a single complaint, quietly waiting as the plane taxied back.

The child has since been discharged and has returned home without any major issues.

The doctor reminds that during a seizure, there is no need to panic. Placing the patient on their side and encouraging them to regain consciousness autonomously is key. In severe cases, pressing on acupoints such as Hegu, Renzhong, and Shixuan can have an immediate effect.

It is reported that Huang Yunxuan is skilled in using acupuncture, buried thread at acupoints, auricular therapy, moxibustion, medicated thread moxibustion, and other characteristic therapies, in combination with acupoint application and herbal medicine, to treat chronic fatigue syndrome, stroke, facial paralysis, neck and back pain, and other diseases. With ten years of medical experience, he has supported hospital emergency departments and has been stationed at Pazhou Fangcang Hospital multiple times, cultivating rapid, accurate, and comprehensive diagnostic and clinical emergency abilities.
